Two quotes can describe very different work, even when both say “plaster a room”. A useful written quote makes the areas and preparation clear so you can compare the scope before comparing the total.
1. Identify every surface
List the room, walls, ceiling, reveals, chimney breast, corners and any small areas around fittings. Specify whether the ceiling is included and whether the quote is for a patch, a skim, new board, a base coat or a fuller replacement. Photographs should show the whole space as well as damage.
2. Describe the background and preparation
Ask how loose material, cracks, existing coatings and previous repairs will be handled. A quote that assumes a sound wall is not directly comparable with one that allows for removing damaged plaster and rebuilding. If there is damp or recurring movement, the cause should be considered before a finish is specified.

3. Check what is included
- Labour, materials and whether the specified system includes a backing and finish coat.
- Protection for floors, adjacent surfaces and fittings.
- Access, height, parking and any equipment needed for ceilings or exterior work.
- Removal of old material and waste, including who is responsible for disposal.
- Making good around sockets, pipework, windows and door reveals.
For ceiling work, ask whether “plastering” means skimming an existing ceiling or overboarding and finishing.
4. Agree timing and handover
Ask when the work can start, what access is needed and whether other trades must finish first. The time on site is different from the time plaster needs to dry before painting. Ask for decorating guidance based on the materials used.

Before accepting a quote
Is a price per square metre enough to compare two quotes?
No. The quoted area, prep, materials, access and disposal can differ. A lower rate may cover a simpler scope. Ask each provider to write down what is included.
What if hidden damage is found after work starts?
Ask how changes to scope would be discussed and agreed before additional work. A clear initial quote should state the assumptions about the existing background.
