What skimming means
Skimming applies a thin finishing layer, often around 2–3 mm, over a suitable background to create a smoother wall or ceiling ready for decoration.
When a skim is not enough
A skim can improve the surface, but it cannot make unsound plaster stable or straighten a badly out-of-plane wall by itself. Repairs or more extensive preparation may be required.

Materials are selected for a particular background and purpose. A finishing coat, a backing plaster, a render and a waterproofing system do different jobs. Check compatibility with the substrate rather than treating them as interchangeable.
